Infant allergies and nasonex?
My four month old son has had a stuffy nose ever since he stopped being breast fed. Unfortunately my milk dried up inexplicably. For about a month his nose was constantly stuffed, blocked, but not runny. The pediatrician was concerned because he was not eating as much as he could have been. The pediatrician said that he wanted to try and alleviate my sons allergies to see if he would eat more and so he prescribed pediatric Nasonex. I am not so comfortable with this as it is a corticosteroid. Everything in the house is non allergenic and the house is clean but the pediatrician said he could still be highly sensitive to dust. He snores quite loadly allot of the time and always sounds a little bit like a snorting piglet.
If the Nasonex does the trick and gets him to eat the appropriate amount of formula for his age, is it too risky to be giving him too much of. Would I be one of those crazy mothers if I tried to get him to manage with out it?
I do wonder why you are so concerned about a corticosteroid. Is it because of the name?
Corticosteroids are a completely different class of drug to anabolic steroids, and are considered safe. (I take them for nasal allergies and am allowed to donate blood while doing so, for instance).
Try Googling the two sorts – the link below is one I found – or check with your doctor just to put your mind at rest. I understand the “steroids!” kneejerk reaction very well, but it’s not valid.
