Use surgery to get snoring relief

One of the most important sleep related problems is snoring. It is not a death threaten condition, but it may cause some problems, directly or indirectly. Snoring occurs mainly among the middle aged men and women and in people who are obese. The fact behind snoring occurring in obese people is that they have more muscles around their neck, which gives the neck a fleshy appearance and the muscles collapse during relaxed breathing (i.e.) while sleeping.

The cause of snoring

During sleep, a passage between the throat and the nose narrows. This occurs due to relaxation and causes an air pressure increase in the back of the mouth. That results in vibration of flapping muscles or snoring.

Some snoring only occurs when a person has a cold, inflamed sinuses and has a stuffy nose. Other causes can be drugs or other substances that promote muscle relaxation and encourage the tongue to fall back into the throat opening, or the throat muscles to be relaxed from tension. The relaxed muscles cause the air passages to narrow and initiate the vibrations.

Snoring is mainly caused by the position that the patient sleeps in. When sleeping on your back it may cause your throat and tongue muscles to be pulled back by gravity. Hence it is advised that you sleep in a sideward position. As the only problem here is the unwanted relaxing of muscles and tissues, the most possible cure is to remove any excess skind via surgery.

If you suffer from chronic snoring, you may wonder what options you have for the treatment of this condition. Although you may want to initially be examined by your family doctor, he may eventually refer you to a specialist. You will most likely see an otolaryngologist. The benefit of this visit would be that these physicians have expertise in diagnosis of ear, nose and throat disorders, and they will be able to provide the most comprehensive exam. Should surgery be necessary, he will discuss your options, including a procedure called UPPP. It is the most common surgical procedure for the treatment of snoring conditions.

Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is a more complicated form of surgery to remove the excess tissue in the throat. While these procedures will probably cure mild cases, they may not solve problems caused by sleep apnea. For snorers with nasal obstructions, a different surgery may be the solution.

The Tongue Suspension Procedure helps to prevent the tongue from falling back in the throat by attaching the tongue to a small screw that is inserted into the lower jaw. Another method is Somnoplasty, in which the tissues are contracted by inserting an electrode that passes a current into the tissues, causing re-absorption of the excess tissues.

While an operation will likely remove the cause of snoring, there are still attendant risks. Your doctor will be able to recommend the best solution for your particular condition.
