Friendships Can Last A Lifetime
Me and my friends have always been close. Ever since the year we graduated, we meet up every summer for a camping trip. We don’t even have to arrange it, we just know that the second weekend in August, we head up north to our favorite spot. I grab my dreadnought acoustic guitar, jump in the van with a couple of days of clothes, and hit the road.
We all have different ideas of what camping is, but that’s fine with me. One of us is head chef at some fancy LA restaurant. We give him some cash and he always shows up with the most amazing food. I could never imagine such divine foods were created cooking over a campfire, but he can do it, and we eat like kings. We’ll get up in the morning and he’s working on pancakes from scratch working with hand mixers and everything.
Susan also has a very different idea of camping. She rolls up in a compact RV, all set with all modern conveniences, a generator, and some hefty batteries to keep her powered. I’m pretty sure she gets satellite TV in that thing too! This thing is amazing, all set with her home decor accents to make it feel like she’s really at home.
We eat and drink and reminisce over the good old days, then go for our typical fifteen mile hike up the hill. It used to be a twenty mile hike, but we’ve all gotten older and we’ve scaled it back a bit. It’s a great walk with some really majestic views.
It’s not easy to hike when you’ve been up all night, and with Dave’s snoring, we’re all insomniacs. The first year we went half of us were quaking in our sleeping bags thinking there was a bear in the campground. His snoring is that loud!
Now our camping trips are more special since we lost of one of the gang. He was a great friend, but he sadly lost his life on a motorcycle in an accident on the highway. We miss him more than ever, but it feels like a good way to remember him as we sit around tell stories.
Our trip up every year might come to an end for some of us in the near future. As we get married and have kids, end up having more responsibility, it makes it harder to escape, even for one weekend. Until that day we’ll always cherish these weekends away.
My dog snoring. LOUD.
