What can I do about my snoring problem?

I have already been to the doctor for this and he prescribed a C-pap machine. It really doesn’t do me any good, it’s uncomfortable, and I didn’t notice any change in my energy level. He said there is only 1 other option, which is surgery, but he couldn’t be sure it would do any good. Some nights are worse than others, and I’m not the loudest or worst snorer, and I’ve been told that I stop breathing many times during the night. I am only slightly overweight, about 30 pounds, so I don’t think losing weight will help much. Is there any kind of herbal remedy, exercises, or anything else I can do to help with my snoring problem?

There is good news (you can get rid of snoring without operation) and news that may confront you with having to make decisions regarding your present lifestyle.

It is like asking an overweight woman to stop eating calorie rich unhealthy food in order for here to lose weight and rid herself of diet and lifestyle related diseases. Sometimes they prefer surgery. What can you say.
Snoring is caused mostly in those who are overweight. How many pounds is too much, depends on the person, his habits and circumstances. First of all even a few pounds can be enough to get rid of the fat sitting in the sinuses and blocking the passages causing friction thus creating the whistling sound comparable to draft under a wooden door.

Secondly, stop eating before bedtime. The body takes fluids from everywhere it can to digest. Yes also out of the head: and even from the brain, leaving you with dried out air passages, bad dreams and a uncomfortable night. When this happens for many years it impairs the brain in general.
Have your last meal at around 6. Eating something ´wet´ such as a salad later (with fresh vegetables) is fine and drinking lots of water before turning in, is great. Further, get a room humidifier (nothing fancy with filters and stuff) , get a cheapy that uses distilled water. MUST clean it out with vinegar each month though because you don´t want mold to form and get blown into your nostrils. That would create a different problem. Place the humidifier as close to you as possible. If you have pets sleeping in your bedroom, get them into a different room since they take up the best parts of oxygen. Believe it or not leaving you with the left overs which is qualitatively not so pure. Unless of course you can open the window and let fresh air come in.

Choose what is best for you and think twice before you decide on invasive treatment. One of my friends had it done and has never been able to sing again (as good as he used to) and he still snores because what was taken away caused him to also loose the ability to keep the mouth and sinus area wet enough. It also caused a chronic problem with swallowing especially when he has a cold. Remember, most conditions are easily solvable, once we know how. If that ain´t good news. p.s. also no alcohol after dinner since
it dries out tremendously p.s. 2: lose a few pounds – can´t be that hard. p.s.3 try sleeping with your head slightly tilted upwards. p.s.4 Arrange with your partner that she can wake you every time your snoring wakes her. This psychological approach helps you become motivated to really do something about it. This way it becomes a real problem for the both of you (and not only your partner).
