Why is “zzzz” commonly used to signify snoring?

In comics, etc, I see the letter z repeated to show that person is sleeping/snoring, why is this?

If you listen closely to a non-snoring person sleeping, you hear either a nasal ess sound or zee sound. Powers that be decided that the sound comes closer to the zee.
