Why does my dad keep snoring?
My father has always been a snorer, but lately its been worse. We can hear it through the walls, my mom has gotten sick from no sleep. The nose stripes don’t work because he says they are too tight. Changing sleep positions doesn’t work. I have looked up some other causes, my dad is overweight ( that’s what the wii fit said ), he does drink, but he doesn’t want to to change. Is there anything we can do and please don’t say surgery.
The best thing your dad can do is talk to his PCP (primary care physician). He/she can order a sleep study. They will hook him up to a bunch of electrodes (doesn’t hurt they are stuck onto you with a puddy like substance) They will then monitor his oxygen and sleep patterns and heart rate and a bunch of things while he sleeps. Then they will determine if he has sleep apnea or not. Most people who are overweight do suffer from sleep apnea however, it is not ALWAYS the case. The most commone type of apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) There are different types of apnea. If he has sleep apnea they will order a cpap for him wich is a machine that offers continuous positive airway pressure. It’s kind of like if you were to hold your head out the window of the car while driving. You place the mask over your face while you sleep and it helps you to get the air in your lungs that he is not getting while sleeping. This will allow both him and your mother to sleep better. I have known married couples to sleep in seperate rooms because of this and once they get the machine….they can finally sleep next to each other. In some cases they haven’t been in the same room for 10 years. Go to google and research CPAP.

Does he often stop breathing while snoring? (Hence apnea…cessation of breathing.)
