snoring sleeping positions
snoring query?

My husbands snoring is driving me crazy. His first wife slept on the couch for 2 years becasue of it and i can understand why.
It is every night all night, doesnt matter what position he sleeps in ie even on his front he snores!
I have ear plugs (heavy duty ones from snoring society), sleep with my covers and hand over my ears and still i can hear him. It is so loud that if he wakes and talks to me i cant hear him.
I got him nasal strips- useless, a spray for his mouth and nose – cost £13. and useless. he has been to gp twice who said he has a prob with his nose but it cant be fixed.

I am starting to get resentful even though i know it is not his fault. I feel he should try to lose some weight (he ie over weight) but he continues to drink lots of coke and eat crisps.
Any ideas ?

Snoring can cause sleep disturbance resulting in poor concentration during the day. The partner of a snorer can lose up to an hour of sleep a night or 365 hours a year!

The only relief from this torture is to sleep in another room or if the noise is so unbearable another house!! Snoring can and does lead to divorce.

Can Obesity be a Major Cause of Snoring?
Discover why obesity is the cause of bad health and disturbed sleep
Obesity is on the rise and is a danger to your health. It’s also known to induce snoring due to the extra muscle and tissue around the neck and throat. This extra tissue moves about and creates the snoring noise.

This excess tissue also causes a hindrance to the flow of air and so the heavier someone is the louder the snore!

Losing Weight will not only benefit your health and prevent diabetes and heart disease it will also help you to eliminate your snoring problem.

If you find it hard to stick to a diet and maintain the motivation required then a diet program may be a good idea. There are many of them and each one is different but they all offer you a structured diet regime with support.

Losing weight will give you more energy and greater powers of concentration. Obesity and snoring can become a vicious circle. Obesity can cause snoring which disturbs your sleep resulting in drowsiness and poor concentration.

You are less likely to want to exercise when you’re tired and more likely to turn to chocolate and biscuits to give you energy.

There are many causes of snoring and many snoring treatments but which one will work for you? There are many causes of snoring including obesity, allergies, smoking and alcohol. … Obesity and snoring can become a vicious circle. Snoring intensity may be worsened by nasal obstruction, and sleeping medications. Other causes are enlarged tonsils, adenoids, receding chin and sleeping on the back; sleep disorders such as OSA ( obstructive sleep apnea) and aging.

There are many causes of snoring and many snoring treatments but which one will work for you?
It depends on what type of snorer you are.

1) One tip is to make sure you regularly vacuum your mattress and clean under the bed. It’s amazing how much dust can collect under the bed! Dust mites are microscopic and you won’t be able to see them but a mattress can contain hundreds of thousands of dust mites!

Dust irritates the nasal passages causing swelling and a build up of mucus. This narrows the airways causing a vibration of tissues resulting in the snoring noise.

2) Many, but not all, cases of snoring are related to weight gain. Losing weight can be a very effective form of snoring therapy.

3) In cases where a person snores only while on their back, snoring can be treated by keeping the person off their back. The simplest type of “positional therapy” is putting a tennis ball in a sock, and pinning the sock to the back of the person’s pajama top.

4) In more advanced cases of snoring, positional therapy ceases to work: the person snores in all positions. In such cases, an oral appliance which repositions the tongue or the jaw can be tried. Some appliances are available over-the-counter, and some appliances must be dispensed by dentists.
5) Many authorities recommend routine assessment for sleep apnea after oral appliance therapy has been applied. Use of C-PAP for OSA.

6) Surgery is a highly effective treatment for snoring. In children, removing the tonsils and adenoids is the most common type of surgery. In adults, a variety of surgical procedures are used.

7) Many authorities recommend routine assessment for sleep apnea after surgery.

Several treatment options include:
Weight loss; nasal decongestant; positonal therapy; surgery oral appliance and breathing mask.

My husband also snores. So I try to tell him to allow me to sleep first before him. Actually, his snores puts me to sleep sometimes. Snoring can also be caused by fatigue. So try to advise him not to eat a heavy meal before bedtime and don’t go to bed quite exhausted.

Get him to exercise regularly and stick to a healthy diet. Both of you can do this.
