Zzz: to sleep. Why?

Does anyone know the origin of the characters “zzz” representing sleep or the act of sleeping? One might, rather obviously, suggest that the “zzz” is reminiscent of snoring. What’s the real answer? And when did this come into Western use?

Zzz may refer to:

* Sleep, where “zzz” is an onomatopoeic (see definition below) of snoring;

“Onomatopoeia (occasionally spelled omomatopœia) is a word, or occasionally, a grouping of words, that imitates the sound it is describing, and thus suggests its source object, such as “bang” or “click”, or animal such as “moo”, “oink”, “quack” or “meow”.

Onomatopoeic words exist in every language, although they are different in each.”

Most likely came into use when illustrations or comic strips/books became popular with use of “talk bubbles.” Earliest comics came into popularity with satirical drawings for most of the 19th century.
